'To talk about the BRICS is to talk in superlatives'. The theme of this course is extremly topical considering that the BRICS have now become almost fashionable in international discourse. This course will give insight into the emergence of those growing giants as undeniable economic and political actors in the International System. Their rise is one of the major transformations affecting the structure of the global order. This course will provide with the indicators permitting to define the BRICS as economic and political players, through the examination of situations illustrating their growing international integration. We will study the impact of the BRICS' role for the current and future international scenario, individually and collectively.This course will be International Relations based, but as we look at the emergence of the BRICS it will also have to be trans-disciplinary and include economic aspects. This course tackles a range of themes: multilateralism, the reform of international organisations, the formation of new blocs, the participation of the BRICS in strategic debates like commercial negotiations and climate change, aid and development, sports mega-events, etc. We use those situations to explore and compare the respective attitudes and approaches of each BRICS country.

Students who might be interested in this course may come from Political Science, International Relations or Economics backgrounds. This course should benefit students who are interested in one (or more) of the BRICS countries, and wish to learn more about the integration of this country into the International System. The course is open to students of all backgrounds.

Course aim
Students should gain from this course:- Broad comprehension of the dynamics affecting the contemporary balance of power;- Detailed knowledge about the emergence of the BRICS in economic and political terms;- Specific understanding of the role of the BRICS in particular instances, for example in International Organisations, in strategic debates like climate change, etc.
