The course introduces participants to the linkages between business and human rights from a variety of (legal, regulatory, and policy) perspectives. The content and implementation of the 2011 UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights take a center stage. Participants become familiar with the main actors in business and human rights, and their respective duties and responsibilities. The course covers international legal and policy initiatives on business and human rights across different industries and in different parts of the world. Thematic focuses of the course include extraterritorial human rights protection, business and human rights during armed conflict, and the linkage between business, human rights, and the environment.Participants gain the knowledge and skills necessary to analyze and address issues in the business and human rights domain. Teaching staff includes academics specialized in different areas of business and human rights and practitioners (policy makers and representatives of NGOs and business organizations). Key players in the business and human rights field will deliver evening lectures. The summer school includes a 1-day field trip to business organizations and NGOs in The Hague and a field trip to Amsterdam.Moreover, there will be close cooperation with the parallel Tilburg University Summer School course entitled 'Profits and Sustainability: Corporate Responsibility'. Participants will be given the opportunity to attend several lectures which will provide them with knowledge on the broader topic of corporate social responsibility and facilitate cross-learning.

Target group
Advanced graduate, post-graduate, and doctoral students from law, social & political sciences and cognate disciplines with a working knowledge in human rights law. Representatives of the public service, business organizations and NGOs with an interest in business and human rights issues.

Course aim
After the course participants will;- have understood the linkages between business and human rights (law) in a globalizing world;- have become familiar with the most relevant business and human rights regulatory and policy frameworks;- have learnt about legal and practical challenges involved in protecting human rights in relation to business operations from policy makers and practitioners working in the field;- have gained first-hand practical experience in business and human rights in the course of a field trip to corporations and NGOs in The Hague and a field trip to Amsterdam.
