The winter school addresses PhD students from disciplines of environmental as well as natural resources sciences, engineers, and social sciences related to these fields. PhD students from CCES projects will be given preferential access. PhD students in the above fields from outside CCES are eligible if not all places are allocated to CCES students. A maximum of 25 slots will be available.
The winter school has the following objectives:
1. to improve the capabilities of young scientists to understand and critically analyze the foundations of scientific thinking in the areas of CCES research as well as the societal implications of research results and innovations;
2. to convey the capability to the participants to critically reflect and evaluate their own scientific project with respect to its societal embedding, relevance, and consequences;
3. to systematically establish networks between scientists and stakeholders from administration, policy, and society;
4. to improve the capabilities of participants to develop - in direct dialogue and interaction with stakeholders - concrete recommendations for actions;
5. to convey skills and tools to young scientists which enables them to take responsibility at the interface between research, policy, and public.
Concrete learning outcomes will be defined in the implementation phase in co-operation with the Centre of Teaching and Learning at ETH Zurich (www.diz.ethz.ch/index_EN).
A participation fee of CHF 200 per participant will be levied. The fee covers the costs for the two external block weeks (excluding travel expenses to the seminar locations), organizational support as well as printed course documentation. The curriculum and organizational details will be elaborated in summer 2010. The first call will be opened in autumn 2010 on this site.
