Barriers, limits and constraints to adaptation are increasingly discussed within the scientific communityon adaptation to climate change. Empirical and theoretical research is currently being undertaken in multiple studies and disciplines. Current research focuses on regions, sectors or organizations in both developing and developed countries. Since institutional, political and economic settings are diverse, the problems encountered in adaptation to climate change also differ greatly.
At present, a synthesis of different research perspectives and findings on barriers is timely andpromises to strengthen a systematic and sufficientunderstanding of barriers. We therefore invite researchers (Postdocs and PhDs) worldwide to participate in a workshop to be held in Berlin todiscuss barriers to adaptation to climate change from different disciplinary perspectives. The specific focus is on barriers in developed countries and/or in infrastructural adaptation.
The workshop aims at adding to the understandingof barriers to adaptation by especially addressing the following questions:How can barriers to adaptation be conceptualizedand analyzed?How do barriers differ between different actors (political, economic, and societal) and scales?What political, institutional and organizationalstrategies are suitable for overcoming these barriers?The workshop includes keynotes and paper presentations, followed by both focused discussion of individual inputs as well as working groups and discussion of synthesis work.
