Participants will interpret various film styles, discuss acting methods, visualize filmmaking processes, approach camera-editing dynamics, framing and movement, continuity and discontinuity editing practices, and other devices that can function to advance the cause-effect chain of narration, create parallels, or manipulate story/plot relations.

Target group
This course is aimed for all those interested in cinematic forms inside film and media circles. It is extremely useful for students with a special interest in filmic ways of storytelling, and teachers who would like to use film as a part of their teaching practice.

Course aim
This course aims to give a detailed account on the development of film language and cinematic narration in its many-sided and exciting forms, moving from early silent horror films to exciting musicals, from film noir to mind-blowing science-fiction, from Metropolis to Blade Runner, from Alfred Hitchcock to David Lynch, from Blonde Venus to Heat, from Michelangelo Antonioni to Martin Scorsese, from Jazz Singer to The Man Without a Past, from comedy to melodrama, from Greta Garbo to Grace Jones, from Humphrey Bogart to Al Pacino, and from fiction to documentary.This course prepares students with a critical understanding of filmic techniques and skills to analyze what has been seen. Learning about film language will help to appreciate films, and to engage actively in discourses and discussions about films. In the aftermath of the course there will be a possible web home-site, Internet discussion groups, and invited sessions that support the development of our common interests, and the summation of the course.
