English tailoring is renowned for its quality and style. On this 3 week course you'll discover the cut and construction techniques of period male tailoring and female couture fashion. You'll also explore the history of English tailoring and develop your knowledge during several visits to stunning UK dress and textile collections.

The course begins with an introduction to the influential 'New Look' period of late 1940s female couture. Under our expert guidance you'll learn the complexities of cut, construction and fit of a female jacket. Exploring a range of couture tailoring methods, you'll take a 40s 'part' jacket to the fitting stage.In the second half of the course, you'll look at English male tailoring and learn how techniques developed from the late 18th century to the present day.

As an insight to the complex methods of bespoke tailoring, we'll guide you through the cut and construction of a male waistcoat. As well as a step-by-step approach to tailoring, you'll leave the course with a reference file of notes and illustrations to support your future tailoring projects. Visit internationally renowned collectionsThe course will include a visit to one of the largest collections of costume and textiles in the UK. You'll be able to study and handle original garments and equipment from the 19th and 20th century that add understanding to the work you're creating on campus.

Learn in well-equipped studios (and a well stocked library)In our open-plan tailoring studios you'll work on industry standard cutting and designing tables, with access to specialised tailoring equipment including industrial sewing machines, over lockers and steam presses. Our library has an extensive collection of original 19th Century tailoring books and a wide range of contemporary books on all aspects of tailoring and couture.

This course is open to all those aged over 17 at the time of taking the course. Some basic sewing skills are required for this course.

GBP 1500: Course Tuition

Please note our tuition fee includes all materials used within the course, teaching costs, plus transport and admission fees for any day trips or study excursions that take place as part of your course.

GBP 120: AUB Accommodation

Accommodation is available to Summer students at 120.00 per week. These are 2 Halls of Residence on our University campus, just a 2 minute walk from our teaching areas. There are single study bedrooms with private en-suite shower rooms and toilets. Each floor has several large communal kitchens equipped with all appliances and equipment for you to use. There are laundry facilities within each building, payphones, lockable storage lockers and secure swipe key systems to enter the building. Our campus is patrolled 24 hours a day by our onsite security team.
