Over the Earth's 4.6 billion year history its climate has varied significantly, both driving and being driven by planetary changes. In studying these past changes we can better understand the complex interactions occurring within the climate system and better predict future scenarios. This introductory course will look at the tools used by climate scientists to reconstruct past climate change. We will investigate natural archives and their proxies as well as look at how we date these records. We will also examine several key snapshots in geological time and discuss important processes and their relevance to our current understanding of anthropogenically driven climate change.

Target group
This course requires the equivalent of 90 ECTS whereof 60 ECTS must be in the natural sciences.A proven knowledge of English is also required.

Course aim
The course shall instruct students about:

- The main components of the Earths climate system and important processes that control natural climate variation

- How past climate change is reconstructed using archives and proxies



- How these paleoclimatic archives are dated

- The geological timescale and global climate change during the last 4.6 billion years

- Humans and climate change into the future
