This course focuses on the translation of basic research knowledge and developments into clinical practice in the UMC Utrecht Cancer Center. For this purpose various departments from the University Medical Center Utrecht and Utrecht University will introduce their lines of cancer research and the recent developments in detection and treatment of cancer.

Both molecular and technical developments will be discussed. The course will focus on requirements for successful clinical and translational oncology, like multidisciplinary collaboration, taking into account the central position of the patient. The course combines lectures, tutorials with hands-on experiments and tours. This course may be combined with the Summer School "Molecular Mechanisms in Cancer" on July 25-29, 2011.

Target group
Advanced bachelors/beginning masters with both a medical background and a demonstrable affection for science, as well as proficiency in English. Applicants go through a selection procedure; maximum number of participants is 20.

Course aim
To introduce the student to current basic cancer research and developments, and to show how this knowledge can be translated successfully into clinical practice.
