The main premise of collaborative learning is that students learn by interacting with each other, sharing and building upon their skills and experiences. However, group activities do not necessarily mean fruitful interactions that would promote learning. Even inside a group, students may find themselves working in isolation. Current instructional approaches and the use of digital media provide the foundation for designing and orchestrating meaningful collaboration. The course takes a close look on collaboration scripts (i.e., guidelines structuring collaboration and scaffolding students), peer feedback, and the affordances of digital media in supporting different forms of interaction. The list of topics includes peer-review, backward feedback, extrinsic/intrinsic feedback, SWISH approaches (i.e., Split When Interaction Should Happen), scripting and overscripting.
