Collective painting is an important method of teaching and art making at the Department of Art in Aalto University School of Art and Design. The works are teacher/student collaborations where the professor conducts a group of students like a bandleader would lead a jazz band.
The aim is to make not a %5C'student work%5C' but a relevant piece of contemporary art, with the copyright shared by the students and the professor. The discussions as well as merely painting in silence can both be seen as the practice-based ways of learning and developing the practice of critical art. The same method has been used in group efforts with children, teenagers and adult amateurs.
The students in the group - called Perkele Collective - are chosen from applicants who present a digital portfolio of their previous work. The applicants whose portfolio has arrived by March 15, 2011 will receive the results by the end of March. If there are places left in the course, another deadline for the arrival of the portfolio is May 15, 2011. The results of these applications will be announced at the end of the May 2011.
