This intensive summer course is designed to help both researchers and activists gain new insights into the role which civil society can play in advocating for free expression online and communication policy change, and will highlight the potential of technology and online tools for mobilizing and organizing constituencies and for enhancing the security and privacy of advocates.

Target group
The course is intended for communication, human rights, or technology professionals and researchers working in policy advocacy organizations, NGOs, media development agencies; as well as policy-makers, activists, academics (including PhD student and advanced MA students), journalists or other media practitioners with demonstrated interest in communication policy change.Pre-requisites:Familiarity with course topics and a demonstrated interest in communication, policy advocacy and technology. Must be able to demonstrate how the course will be useful in future work, activities and/or studies.
Course aim
The goals of the course are:- To stimulate and advance research, scholarship and academic discourse on the role of civil society in the communication policy-making;- Provide a forum for concrete skill sharing of online tools for advocacy and enhancing the security and privacy of Internet activity- To identify a core group of scholars working in this area and nurture their research interests and capabilities with the aim of future collaborations amongst faculty, course participants, institutions and CEU- To work with partners such as the OSI Information Program and Google to identify a network of human rights activist, bloggers and media policy advocates who are interested in contributing to the development of research in the field;- To give participants the opportunity to gain valuable experience in developing an advocacy campaign though hands-on case study projects, field trips to local organizations involved in innovative new media technologies, and interaction and networking with a diverse group of participants.

Those who wish to obtain credits that count toward their degree should consult their home institution in advance whether the CEU SUN course can be accepted for credit transfer. The CEU Summer University Office will be able to provide all course documentation, such as course description, syllabus, reading list, etc. upon request
Course fee
EUR 550: The tuition fee is due by May 28, 2011.The tuition fee includes participation in the summer course, some administrative costs, an orientation program and welcome pack, access to the CEU Library and IT facilities, reading materials, printing quota, and some social activities.
EUR 500: Early Bird fee is available for tuition payment made by April 30, 2011.
