Comparative Criminal Justice: The Dutch Regulation of Vices

The Netherlands is known for its liberal approach towards regulating vices. Vices are goods or services for which there is a public demand, but which are in many countries prohibited for reasons of public health or morality. Often, trafficking these goods and services is controlled by organized crime.Examples are the use of cannabis, prostitution and gambling. The Dutch approach is controversial: some praise it for its transparency in tackling social problems, otherreject it as morally reprehensible.This course takes a critical, comparative and interdisciplinary approach towards Criminal Justice and national and local policies towardsregulating vices and tackling crime problems. It focuses on Dutch criminal policies as well as the execution of these policies in Amsterdam and other cities in the Netherlands. In the course, students will study the policy theories, practical problems in executing these policies and the effects on the targeted social and crime problems, and compare these to the ways other countries deal with these issues.

- To be able to analyze and critically asses the policy theory behind regulation of vices and criminal justice policies in the Netherlands- To distinguish empirical and normative elements in the debate concerning the value of these policies- To be able to compare the advantages and drawbacks of these policies with the ways other countries deal with similar issues.



Credits
3.0 ECTS creditsECTS is the standard European credit system, each ECTS credit is equivalent to 28 study hours. All courses are worth 3 ECTS. Because some education systems (such as the American universities) base their credits on contact hours, we have included the contact hours in the course description on our website.

EUR 1350[Convert to USD]The tuition fee of this course is 1350,- and includes furnished accommodation and the orientation programme. If you select two consecutive courses and study with us for four weeks, you will receive a 10% discount on the second course fee.Some courses will include excursions. We will also organize trips and excursions as part of our social programme, which is a great way to get to know your fellow students and learn more about Amsterdam and the Netherlands. The social programme is not included in the tuition fee
