Our Creative Writing course is one of the most exciting and diverse courses available in Britain. The course makes the most of the experience of some of the leading talents in the vibrant culture of contemporary British and Irish literature. Last year's guest writers included Douglas Maxwell, Leontia Flynn, Michael Rosen, Matt McAllester and Chris Dolan, all of whom led Master classes in various writing genres.
Creative Writing at SUISS is exceptional in offering its participants superb events organised to coincide with the prestigious Edinburgh International Book Festival. The intensive three-week course provides experience in a wide range of genres, including fiction, poetry and drama, and in subgenres such as crime fiction, life writing, historical fiction, writing for the radio and science fiction. Its academic programme offers students: - Four to five writing workshops each week, comprising Master classes with established writers and small group seminars led by SUISS tutors.
Course tutors all have extensive teaching experience and have published work of their own; - Unique events organised in conjunction with the Edinburgh International Book Festival, which coincides with the final week of the course; - The opportunity to attend the lectures for the Contemporary Literature module, which is compulsory for credit students. These daily lectures during the last two weeks, give students the chance to develop their critical skills and extend their knowledge of contemporary British and Irish literature; - A lecture on publishing; - An individual one-hour tutorial each week, allowing students to meet with their tutor to analyse and edit their work; - International editorial groups, where students working in similar genres will meet to discuss their work in an informal environment; - The opportunity to get published in our bi-annual publication Northern LightCreative Writing students can combine this course with the Modernism module of our Text and Context Literature programme and use the week in between the courses either for private study or travel.

Target group
The SUISS Creative Writing course is designed to cater for students with varying levels of writing experience. The School is happy to consider applications from undergraduates, postgraduates, teachers and aspiring writers, as well as published writers keen to widen their skills. Places are awarded on the basis of the submitted sample of their work and the letter of recommendation.
Course aim
The course offers developing writers a dynamic and supportive environment in which to further their writing skills while also providing a unique opportunity to develop critical skills by attending the morning lectures in Contemporary literature. Every student attending the Summer School receives a Certificate of Attendance if they complete the Course. Students who attend the course for credit will receive a Certificate of Credit from Edinburgh University.
Credits
7.5 ECTS credits. Credit is available to, although not compulsory for our Creative Writing students. SUISS credit is officially accredited through the University of Edinburgh Credit Awarding Body (SCOTCAT) and can be transferred into the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS).The SUISS credit scheme is based on a combination of contact teaching hours, independent work and formal assessment. This credit can be sought at two levels (SCQF8 and SCQF10 of SCOTCAT) which are equivalent to junior honours (1-3 years of study) and senior honours (4 or more years of study) levels.
This allows SUISS students to pursue the credit at a level appropriate to the stage of their studies at their home institution. SUISS offers ECTS 7.5 points (which is SCOTCAT 15 points) for Creative Writing, as well as a grade, which reflects the quality of their assessments. It is compulsory for Creative Writing credit students to attend the morning literature lectures of the Contemporary Literature Course to meet credit requirements.

GBP 1355. Course Fee: The course fee includes all tuition, a social and cultural programme, tickets to selected events at the Edinburgh International Book Festival, full use of the library and computer facilities of Edinburgh University and lunch on weekdays. GBP 610. Accommodation Fee; Accommodation will be in standard study room in the Universitys Halls of Residence at 585, or in en-suite accommdation at 756 for the 3 weeks of the Creative Writing course. Extra nights can be booked on request.All accommodation fees include breakfast and dinner
