Memory is the ability to remember and reconstruct the past. This seminar will mainly focus on how cultural factors influence remembering, in general and the remembering of our own lives, in particular. In this context, we will discuss research in cultural differences in memory and autobiographical memory, especially in life scripts and life stories.
The first part of the program will introduce key memory concepts, such as encoding, storage, retrieval, semantic memory, and episodic memory. The rest of the sessions will consist of discussions on crosscultural studies in cognition, memory, and autobiographical memory. A special focus will be given to the memory phenomena of childhood amnesia and the reminiscence bump. Course offered by Department of Psychology and Behavioural Sciences
