This course will examine the cultural dimensions of empires in the nineteenth and twentieth century. Students will discuss the historical background of various empires during this period and will be introduced to the terminology and the academic debate. Issues that will be examined during the course include the direct and indirect forms of empire, civilizing missions, the role of culture and representation, and the complex cultural exchanges between the center and the periphery. Excursions to the Royal Tropical Institute in Amsterdam and the National Museum of Ethnology in Leiden are included in the program.
