The means to damage the central elements of modern life have become increasingly available to hostile states, terror networks, multinational actors, and criminal organizations. It appears that attacks which would cause massive disruption to everyday life are only a matter of time. Similarly, the methods at the use of states in general and major states, in particular, are evolving. The central actor in the Snowden scandal, NSA, and similar intelligence organizations in other states are increasingly taking on major societal challenge. rnrnAs cybercrime is already a well established activity, it would be absurd for states to lack effective tools in the fields vital for security and resilience. Surveillance and data-gathering, which is done by different security agencies and private security, is inevitably going to be replicated in the complex arteries and byways of the global digital flows. However, the tools that can be used by the state authorities may collide with ideals of privacy protection. Finding the balance between the ability of people to carry out their digital activities in privacy and states' legitimate - domestic and foreign - security interests is going to be difficult when our lives are increasingly cyber-enabled and embedded. However, this balance is going to remain under much public scrutiny over the coming years.

The course is designed for students at advanced BA (2nd, 3rd) and MA levels. The course will require focus and attention on the part of the students.

Course aim
The summer course organized by the Institute of Political Science and Governance aims to give participants a better comprehension of resilient societies and a better understanding of Cyber politics and power.
