The first edition of the Darwin Summer School will address the perturbation of the global carbon cycle, in the past, present and future. Main subjects will be ocean acidification, microbial ecology and biomarkers and terrestrial carbon cycling.
Renowned scientists like Jack Middelburg, Jelle Bijma, Henry Hooghiemstra, Stefan Schouten and many others will provide you with the latest results in research on these subjects. This Summer School is all about interdisciplinary research: you're expected to work on the interface of biology, earth sciences, chemistry and physics. Darwin Center for BiogeosciencesThe Darwin Center for Biogeosciences is a successful network promoting truly interdisciplinary research on how System Earth is working under continuously changing conditions.
The Center integrates 20 excellent Dutch research groups into a single national institute. The 64 research projects started to date involve 52 PhD students and 12 postdocs working on research topics such as climate reconstructions, the carbon and nitrogen cycle, microbiological processes and ocean acidification.High quality programThe Darwin Center comprises a pool of excellent lecturers, who are renowned in their fields. Target group
The Darwin Summer School aims at enthusiastic and motivated MSc students who have a background in biogeosciences, and starting PhD students interested in an excellent introduction to the field of biogeosciences.
Course aim
The Darwin Summer School will provide you with a state-of-the-art introduction on biogeosciences. Within biogeosciences the global carbon cycle is an important topic, which can only be studied by using different fields of science. You will learn to integrate knowledge from biology, earth sciences, chemistry and physics. The Summer School includes lectures, lab work, field research and an excursion. The classes will be highly interactive and student-centered, involving group projects, discussions and presentations.
