We consider deliberation and its effects, principally through the lens of Deliberative Polling. We shall discuss the theory of deliberation (how to define it, what should be expected of it); the design and instrumentation of processes, notably Deliberative Polling, intended to induce it and measure its effects; and some of the statistical issues that arise in analysing the results.
More specifically, we shall consider the concept and theory of deliberation; a taxonomy of deliberative designs; Deliberative Polls (DPs) as quasi-experiments; issues of sampling and recruitment; the structuring and moderation of small group discussions; the design and crafting of measurement instruments (questionnaires); the possibility of experimentation within DPs; testing for representativeness and correcting for biases; measuring and explaining knowledge gains and other signs of successful deliberation; measuring and explaining attitude change, increasing proximity to single-peakedness, and other outcomes.
Period
01-07-2013 - 04-07-2013 (1 weeks)
Target group
Level of the course: PhDLevel of the students applying for the course: Bachelor, Master, PhD (All three, given preliminary requirements)
Course aim
This course concerns deliberation, especially as captured by Deliberative Polls, and its effects on attitudes and behaviours. What differences does it make when people learn, think, and talk much more about policy issuesand do so with more heterogeneous interlocutors, coming to more serious grips with a wider range of viewsthan in their everyday lives? We shall give special attention to methodological questions, some having to do with research design and measurement, others with the statistical analysis of the result
