Intercultural encounters have increased rapidly along with globalisation. It is no longer just a limited group of people - sojourners, expatriates and those traveling outside their native countries - who must face the challenges of intercultural encounters, as an increasing number of us come face to face with "difference" or "foreignness" in our work places and immediate living environments.
Despite the increase in everyday intercultural experiences, however, these encounters often fail to increase our understanding of "other" ways of acting and being. This poses a great challenge to enhancing individuals' performance in multicultural settings and raises the question: How can we learn to be interculturally competent?Intercultural competence - or competence in general - is often divided into three main categories: knowledge, skills and attitude, all of which will be examined during the course. Together we will construct a solid theoretical basis of what it means to be interculturally competent.
Conscious reflection on our own practices and behaviour is the starting point of this learning process. We will share experiences in "foreign" cultures, particularly the international participants' Finnish experience during the course, and practise and develop several alternative methods of observing, interpreting and acting . For example, several exercises will allow participants to try out different roles and strategies in a safe environment, thus allowing them to widen their comfort zone. All the senses will be used as we analyse, debate, feel and touch. The aim is for participants to experience a common learning process in which shared language and shared meanings are created within our intercultural and interdisciplinary group.

EUR 470: Course fee
The course fee can be paid with a credit card or with a bank transfer before the start of the Helsinki Summer School. It can also be paid upon your arrival in Helsinki. Degree and exchange students attending universities in the Helsinki area are exempted from the course fee. Degree and exchange students attending other Finnish universities are required to pay a half of the course fee (235 EUR).
EUR 150: Registration fee
The registration fee is 150 EUR additional fees for international students. Payment is due within seven days of receipt of written notification of your acceptance to Helsinki Summer School. If you register before 31 May 2012, you will receive a 50 EUR discount on the registration fee. The registration fee for degree or exchange students attending Finnish universities is 50 EUR. The registration fee is non-refundable. Payment may be made either by bank transfer or credit card (Visa and Eurocard/Mastercard only).If we do not receive a credit card payment or copy of the bank transfer within one week of notification of your acceptance, we will have no choice but to cancel your course reservation. Your application will, however, remain in our database and, if there are still places available, you may renew your registration simply by contacting us.
