Developing Interdisciplinary Research Projects On Humanitarian Action

This summer school will allow researchers and practitioners involved in the humanitarian field to develop and critically analyze their own research project. It aims at bringing together PhD students from around the world and professionals involved in humanitarian research projects to exchange with colleagues, international faculty and expert practitioners. The purpose is to encourage and share critical reflection on doing research in the humanitarian field, which necessarily draws on various disciplinary approaches. This is a unique opportunity to be part of a research platform in the capital of humanitarianism.rnrnThe summer school has several objectives for the participants:rnrnTo offer them the possibility to present and discuss challenges of their research project in interactive sessions with peers and international facultyrnTo participate in workshops and lectures led by top-ranked researchers that will allow the participants to deepen their understanding of different methodological approachesrnTo build a research network and get an overview of existing postgraduate research programsrnThe program will have four main themes:rnrnEthics and security of the research and the researcher in fragile contexts and involving vulnerable populationsrnThe use of new technologies and big data to improve research (crowdsourcing, etc.)rnThe measure and evaluation of the impact of humanitarian interventions using qualitative as well as quantitative methodsrnThe implementation of an interdisciplinary approach in doing research on humanitarian action (epistemology, disciplinary tools and concepts)

Target group
The course is aimed at students who are starting a PhD or are already working on a PhD thesis, and experienced practitioners who are developing a research project on humanitarian action. The course is taught in English.rnrnWe encourage applications from PhD students and practitioners coming from a large diversity of disciplines: social sciences, economic sciences humanities, arts, medicine. Research projects can either address humanitarian interventions (roots and dynamics of humanitarian crises, responses to disasters, armed conflicts or peace-building), or analyze humanitarian action in itself (professionalization, sociology of actors, dilemmas, etc.).rnrnA special form for applying will be available on this website in January 2014. Applications will be selected on the basis of these following criteria:rnrnAn extended outline of the research proposal (5-6 pages), including the rationale and the methodological outline.rnReasons for applying to the course and how this will potentially benefit the participants research projectrnA description of the expectations for the summer school, including methodological issues the participant would like to explore and discuss
