This course provides an analysis of the historical and current processes leading to economic, political, and social reforms in East Central Europe. This region is rich with a diverse set of ethnic cultures, economic developments, and political experiments before and after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. As part of the "emerging markets" movement among countries who choose to move toward Western capitalism and democracy, the course will also describe activities including legal, economic, political and social change which are currently underway.

Topics: Changing economic and political concepts, historical overview of the region and their post-Soviet revolutions, economic issues associated with transition economies, state of political change in various countries in the region, institutional factors affecting business, "when is transition over?" and the emergence of east central European capital markets.

Target group
Students will be prepared for this course with an introductory background in economics (first courses in microeconomics and macroeconomics) and a fundamental understanding of the modern history of Eastern and Central Europe. No advanced or specific methodologies are required.

Course aim
Students completing this course will gain an appreciation of the historic, economic, political and cultural similarities and differences between East and West. In addition, students will be better prepared to understand the future economies of the various countries of Central and Eastern Europe.
