The Internet and other new communication technologies have created whole new possibilities for sharing personal data and other digital information, electronic marketing, deliverance of performances of good and services. These possibilities have caused and continuous to cause new legal questions to be solved. The course concentrates on EU legal instruments and policy to regulate different aspects of electronic commerce, covering both business-to-business (B2B) and business-to-consumer (B2C) transactions.

Where appropriate, reference is made to the legal position in countries outside the EU such as the United States, for comparative purposes. Special attention is paid to legal issues concerning data protection, online contracting, intellectual property rights and relevant private international law issues (i.e. Determining jurisdiction in "cyberspace"). The objective of the course is provide the student with a general understanding of the legal questions arising from electronic commerce and the associated European and international legal sources.
