This course examines emotions from a multidisciplinary perspective, making use of anthropology, sociology, psychology, gender studies, postcolonial studies, linguistics and philosophy. Students of these fields - advanced Bachelor's level or at a Master's level - are warmly invited to participate in this course.
The course starts with introductory lectures to the topic and to the different multidisciplinary perspectives, based on recent academic research and results in the field. Background reading and a pre-assignment will be delivered before the beginning of the course. The students will work in groups and participate in a workshop on a concrete case of intercultural encounters. To complete the course, the groups will prepare presentations that will be analysed by their fellow students and evaluated by the course teachers.

Course aim
The students will be introduced to key concepts of interculturality such as otherness, subjectivity and individualism, which they can then apply to a real case study. The course will highlight different psychosocial dynamics and processes of exclusion and inclusion and ways of accessing symbolic and economic capital in a society. The crucial contribution of the course is to bring theory to practice: the students will learn how to design research techniques to study emotions. Qualitative research methods of ethnography, critical discourse analysis and emotional performance will be studied and applied to an intercultural context in Helsinki.rn

EUR 490: Course fee. The course fee can be paid with a credit card or with a bank transfer before the start of the Helsinki Summer School. It can also be paid upon your arrival in Helsinki. Degree and exchange students attending the universities organising the Helsinki Summer School are exempted from the course fee. The course fee for professionals is 790 EUR.
EUR 150: Registration feernrnThe registration fee is 150 EUR additional fees for international students. Payment is due within seven days of receipt of written notification of your acceptance to Helsinki Summer School. If you register before 31 May 2012, you will receive a 50 EUR discount on the registration fee. The registration fee for degree or exchange students attending the universities organising the Helsinki Summer School is 50 EUR.
