The course examines the political economy of the development and current practices of the European Union and the United States in cooperating on regulatory matters to enhance trade and investment flows and enforce competitive markets for goods and services. The goal is to understand the structure of the economic issues in the current debate on trade, investment, and competition policies. The course introduces economic concepts and theories from the applied economics areas of international trade and finance, industrial organization and regulation, and the economics of organizations.

Target group
The course is suited for students studying political economy or economics, political science, international relations, and international business. The required economic background for the course is principles of microeconomics.
Course aim
Students will learn to appreciate the degree of interdependencies and regulatory cooperation in place between the economies of the United States and the European Union. An in-depth knowledge of the institutional mechanisms governing transatlantic trade and capital flows will improve the understanding of global corporate decision-making concerning supply chain management, foreign direct investment, and mergers and acquisitions.
