During the twenties of the 20th century, some European capitals have been represented in the so-called, "silent city symphonies".Films like "Berlin, Symphony of a Great City"(1927) by Walter Ruttmann, "Rain" (1929) by Joris Ivens, "Man with the Movie Camera" (1929) by Dziga Vertov, "The Tower" (1928) by Rene Clair offer interesting, inspiring, beautiful portraits of Berlin, Amsterdam, Moscow and Paris.
The actual capital of Belgium and Europe, Brussels, was European Capital of Culture in 2000. For that occasion, Alex Stockman and Kaat Camerlynck produced the film "Bruxelles Mon Amour" (directed by three generations of Brussels' filmmakers, Marc Didden - director of "Brussels By Night" (1983) - , Peter Vandekerckhove and Kaat Beels).
Since his beginnings as a director, the city of Brussels plays an important part in all Alex Stockman 's fiction films and creates a peculiar poetic atmosphere : "I Know I'll see Your Face Again" (2000), "Eva reste au placard les nuits de pleine lune" (2006) and "Pulsar" (2010).During the first week, the cinematographic representation of cities/capitals will be discussed in lectures and thematic projections, organized by Wouter Hessels. In the transition from the first to the second week, all films by Stockman are screened in the presence of the director and producer Kaat Camerlynck.During the second week, Alex Stockman will lead a practical workshop on representing and portraying the European Capital of Culture, anno 2011, Tallinn.
