The course is part of the Cologne International Summer University, an intensive academic summer program combined with cultural activities directed to international students and students of the University of Cologne. Each course is complemented by a language and cultural introduction and a field trip to a company or institution.

The course "European Energy Policies and Energy Economics" combines lecturers, case studies, students presentation, discussions and a simulation game. It focuses on the following topics: Energy Concepts; The Energy Mix in Europe and its transition; The Electricity Mix in Europe: Perspectives for Renewables; Infrastructure for gas, storage and electricity: Status quo, challenges and perspectives; Europe versus member states in Energy Policies: Overview on EU energy legislation; Environment and Climate objectives; Innovation; Investments in European Electricity; Market Design; Images of the future.rn

Target group
Advanced undergraduate business and economics majors/minors (after two years of study). Proof of English proficiency (TOEFL ibt 96 or equivalent) is required.rn

Course aim
Energy issues of all kinds appear every day in the media as highly relevant. These issues include the energy mix: electricity, gas, oil, coal, nuclear, renewables, the energy prices; geopolitical issues and security of supply, transit countries; climate change and CO2 markets; the highly complex electricity governance; nnovation and energy transitions; and finally the regional scope: Europe.

This course intends to familiarize students with energy basics: the history of energy policies and energy in our societies, the political economy of energy, energy supply and demand, European energy policy, and the governance and economics of electricity. EU policies in the field include the three liberalization packages, the job sharing between member states and Brussels in the field of energy; the rise of environmental and climate policies and their impact on energy. rnEuropean energy policies shall be put into perspective in the context of other regions energy policies: US, Japan, but also China.

After succesfully completing the programme, international students receive an academic transcript where the course title(s), the ECTS credits earned and the final grades appear on.

Course fee
EUR 1100: The programme fee includes accommodation (in double room), public transportation ticket within and around Cologne, course materials, welcome and farewell event, language and cultural orientation, company visit, city tour, teambuilding event, wireless internet on campus, access to University's computer pools and libraries, access to subsidized food at the Universitys restaurants and cafs.

EUR 1400: The programme fee includes accommodation (in single room), public transportation ticket within and around Cologne, course materials, welcome and farewell event, language and cultural orientation, company visit, city tour, teambuilding event, wireless internet on campus, access to University's computer pools and libraries, access to subsidized food at the Universitys restaurants and cafs. The course is offered as part of the Cologne International Summer University (CISU). If you decide to participate at two sessions (4 weeks in total), the prize is EUR 1500 (double room) or EUR 2000 (single room).
