Find Processing in Archaeological Fieldwork

This programme offered by the University of Amsterdam Summer School in cooperation with the Netherlands Institute in Athens offers hands-on experience with fieldwork in Greece. Processing finds is a feature of every excavation and field survey, and essential to any analysis of fieldwork results. Students are usually involved in find processing, or even do most of the work, but this method has a limited place in most academic curricula. Those who do the actual job often receive little training. This programme aims to fill that gap by offering a combination of theoretical and methodological classes with practice in a real field project, as well as visits to sites and deposits. It also includes discussions with and instruction by academic and heritage service archaeologists who supervise fieldwork and the processing and publishing of results.

Course aim
During the two week course, the whole process from find retrieval to recording, classification, data processing and storage will be reviewed. The insights gained will be put into practice and both the history of the discipline and current methodologies will be examined. Work includes basic training in recognising the main types of Greek pottery and other find categories encountered in fieldwork, as well as setting up and filling in find databases. Academic advancement The course is a good starting point for those planning to participate in fieldwork, write a thesis or do research directly involving finds. Since some of the main archaeological sites of Greece are visited during the course, it also offers a general view of the archaeology and landscapes of this beautiful country.

EUR 1395[Convert to USD]Fee includes accommodation, meals during the second week, all transport in Greece and entrance fees. The fee does not include travel to and from Greece.
