Driven by the societal wish to increase the safety of chemical manufacturing and continuous technological developments, microreactor technology was introduced to the toolbox of synthetic organic chemists some ten years ago. This technology enabled organic chemist to perform organic reactions in a safe and continuous fashion on microliter scale, thereby creating opportunities to conduct reactions in a conceptually different way. Since then, the scope and limitations of flow chemistry have been explored and new developments are still ongoing. The advantages of flow chemistry have become clear, such as rapid mixing and heat exchange, high control over reaction conditions and the ease of scaling up and numbering up microreactor modules. Furthermore, continuous monitoring methods have been developed, including inline analysis with highly sensitive (GC and LC) or non-destructive (IR and NMR) methods. This course includes an introduction to the basic aspects and current developments in flow chemistry and a hands-on module that will give you the opportunity to perform your own flow experiments.

Period
11-08-2014 - 15-08-2014 (1 weeks)

Target group
Courses on flow chemistry are not offered by most bachelors and masters programmes. However, flow chemistry is becoming increasingly important in the chemical industry and could be extremely applicable in an academic research setting as well. This course strives to train BSc, MSc and PhD students on this topic and help them apply this knowledge in research projects

Course aim
After this course you will be able to: 1. Understand the scope and limitations of flow chemistry as a tool for organic synthesis2. Translate a batchwise synthesis procedure into a continuous flow process3. Provide an overview of new developments in the field of flow chemistry4. Design and execute straightforward continuous flow reactions
