This course examines food politics and policies in Europe and the European Union by addressing the current issues pertaining to the production and consumption of food. This is highlighted through a case-based approach that focuses on the most pressing debates with respect to these problems of human welfare (eg obesity and other non-communicable diseases, food security, fair trade), ecological welfare (environmental impacts of meat consumption overfishing, factory farming, organic vs conventional farming) and animal welfare (treatment of animals in food production).

These issues are studied using the tools of public policy analysis and with a keen eye to identifying actors, issues and interests that are at stake in all phases of the policy cycle (agenda setting, decision-making, implementation and evaluation). Course activities consist of (guest)lectures, student presentations and discussions, excursions and independent reading to prepare these activities.A set of mandatory readings will be made available to students.
