This unqiue course covers various facets of forced migration and its management, presented in collaboration with the UNHCR.The course will cover various facets of forced migration including: the causes of flight, the definition of refugee and how it has developed, the rights and duties of refugees under international law, internal displacement, migrant smuggling and human trafficking.The course is co-convened by King's College and the Office of the High Commissioner for Refugees. The course will cover various facets of forced migration including: the causes of flight, the definition of refugee and how it has developed, the rights and duties of refugees under international law, internal displacement, migrant smuggling and human trafficking. It will be thought through a mixed method approach including lectures, seminars and site visits by individuals with direct experience in the field.

Target group
This course is primarily targeted at individuals wishing to start working on issues of forced migration at whatever stage of their career. Participants are expected to have a keen interest on the issues but are not expected to have a background in human rights law, however this is a level five course, usually set at the equivalent of second year undergraduate, so there may be an expectation of the students knowledge and skills in the particular area of study. It is the responsibility of each student to ensure they meet these expectations for any level 5 courses offered as part of the Summer School.

Students will typically: Learn to appreciate the complexity of forced migration and how different issues are inter-related; Understand the law the regulates forced migration and states response to it; Appreciate the various ways in which forced migration can be studied and worked on.
