The up-coning could lead to undesired production of brackish or even seawater. The management of fresh water production in deltaic/coastal zones requires thorough understanding of the theory of density-dependent flow and transport phenomena in porous media. Crucial is insight in the behavior and movement of fresh-saltwater interfaces. This summer school focuses at a variety of subjects related to simultaneous flow of fresh- and saltwater in coastal/deltaic aquifers:
- Fundamental theory of density-dependent flow and transport in porous media
- Mathematical analysis of problems involving fresh salt interfaces (free-boundary problems, integro-differential equations, similarity transformations, etc)
- Numerical methods and dedicated simulation software for density-dependent flow and transport
- Real-world applications: water management of freshwater lenses in the Province Zeeland, artificial recharge of freshwater lenses, etc.
