Oedipus, Medea, Richard III, Romeo, Juliet, and Tartuffe are some of the well known main characters in the history of European drama. These characters have been adapted for the white screen which resulted in highly acclaimed feature films of world cinema. In this course you will explore these fictional characters in depth. First we will analyze fragments from drama texts.
Then we will study how film directors adapted these fictional characters for their art and to what effect. This course provides you with basic semiotic skills for theatre and film. Also, you will meet actors and directors from the Dutch theatre scene who have been staging one of the characters lately and who will share their approach and actual experiences with these characters with you.This course can be combined with Highlights in European Theatre History.

Course aim
After this course students have acquired basic analytic and semiotic skills which enable them to appreciate films more profoundly. They have also gained more insight in the possible underlying motives of filmmakers for adapting drama into film. Besides, they will be acquainted with some of the best known archetypical characters of European drama and the context from which they originate.
