In this course you will travel through 2500 years of turbulent European theatre history. Ten historical key figures will each guide you through a major period. The Greek philosopher Aristotle will tell you all about the use and purpose of Greek tragedy; 16th century's set designer Inigo Jones will explain why he is top of the bill and why Shakespeare is old fashioned; 20th century composer Kurt Weill will make you listen with fresh ears to the music in the performances of the German theatre pioneer Bertolt Brecht.

We will explore their ideas and practices through lectures, discussions, group presentations, film and text fragments. Besides the theoretical study we will practically explore the different periods through a few classes of elementary acting. The course will be concluded with an international skype happening which gives you an opportunity to highlight today's theatre in your home country for the rest of the group.During this course you will have lots of opportunities to visit the spectacular travelling summer festival De Parade. With its more than 80 theatre, dance and music performances it settles down in Utrecht for the period of this course.
