The students will be introduced into the socio-economic transformation of central and eastern Europe, and in particular of Hungary. The aim of the course is to familiarize the participant with the complexities of a regime change, and in addition with the modalities of the Hungarian socio-economic transition. The process of privatisation, capital inflows and outflows, entrepreneurship, national debt and its management, income and wealth disparities are among the topics to discuss.
The students are required to read articles and research papers during the class, be active in class discussion. The learning outcomes of the course include knowledge of the economic and political drivers of the transition process, and particularly of those of Hungary, and to get an inside into the interactions between international players (the European Union, IMF, EBRD, WB) and Hungary as a new member state.

Course aim
The course offers an introduction into the socio-economic transformation of central and eastern Europe, and in particular of Hungary. The subjects covered include economic policy, privatisation, and role of foreign capital in the Hungarian economy. Relations between Hungary and international players (EU, IMF) are discussed.

No prerequisites, but knowledge in economics, politics, history of economics is useful.
