- What is implementation science?A substantial number of health-related studies are published each year. One of the biggest challenges is to effectively identify and use the best available knowledge for decisions and innovations in healthcare. Not surprisingly, these studies have identified several knowledge-performance gaps and performance variations among healthcare providers. This has led to the emergence of a new field of research aimed at improving professional performance and healthcare organisation. This field is known by various names, including implementation science, improvement science and knowledge translation. The research tends to be closely affiliated with clinical practice and health policy and offers a direct response to important societal and clinical issues.- Course objectivesThis unique summer school course offers a quick introduction to implementation science in healthcare. You will learn the key concepts, perspectives, strategies and principles of implementation and improvement science and examine key themes for further research. The course will also cover different research and learning approaches for evaluating implementation strategies, processes and economic assessments. This will be done through case studies and interactive exercises. You will also be asked to elaborate on a specific study protocol through hands-on skills training, interviews with stakeholders, a writing assignment and a group presentation.You will also be given the opportunity to meet with staff from the Scientific Institute for Quality of Healthcare at the Radboud university medical center. This institute has been a world leader in the emerging field of implementation science since its inception. It is currently one of the largest research institutes of its kind in Europe. Its staff works in a range of healthcare sectors and covers a variety of methodological and conceptual approaches. The course coordinator is editor-in-chief of Implementation Science, the internationally celebrated scientific journal in this field.

Master's and Ph.D. students with an (academic) interest in applied health research and improved healthcare delivery. Students may wish to pursue an academic career or a career in health management or health policy, or to take on roles in continuing education and quality improvement for health professionals.
