The successful implementation of any inclusive policy in education is largely dependent on the willingness of teachers in mainstream schools and educators to support inclusive education. In the Netherlands, children with special educational needs (SEN) are increasingly being educated in mainstream school environments. Some teachers find it difficult to deal with the changing classroom population. Although there is a growing recognition that teachers need to be trained to become equipped to teach effectively in inclusive schools, less attention is paid to the influence of attitudes toward inclusive education.
This course focusses on student teachers' attitudes toward the inclusion of children with SEN. The course is a mixture of theoretical plenary sessions, practical workgroups and at least one fieldtrip. Students will be introduced with the inclusion policy on education in the Netherlands. A historical perspective on this topic will be given, and we will focus on students' own personal teaching practices related to inclusive education. There is a fieldtrip implemented in the programme to an inclusive or special/ exclusive school. In workgroups, activities are implemented around the main question: What competencies do general education teachers and special education teachers need to be competent inclusive teachers?

Advanced bachelors/ beginning masters in the early stage of their study, with a background in (special) education or social care.To follow this course successfully, you need to have a fair level of English (level B2).
