Every education system has to deal with the question what to do with children with special educational needs (SEN) in the classroom and in the school. In this course you will discover and discuss different ways to organize education for children with special needs in the classroom. These different ways are based on different views on learning and on the development of children. This course is very interesting for teacher training students as well as for starting professionals: how are you going to deal with special needs in your classroom?
What do you need to handle this? The successful implementation of any inclusive policy in education is largely dependent on the willingness of teachers in mainstream schools and educators to support inclusive education. In the Netherlands, children with special educational needs are increasingly being educated in mainstream school environments. Some teachers find it difficult to deal with the changing classroom population. Although there is a growing recognition that teachers need to be trained to become equipped to teach effectively in inclusive schools, less attention is paid to the influence of attitudes toward inclusive education.
This course focuses on future teachers' attitudes towards the inclusion of children with SEN.Students will be introduced to the inclusion policy in the education system in the Netherlands. We provide a historical perspective on this topic and focus on students' own personal teaching practices related to inclusive education. A field trip to a school of special education and to a mainstream school is included in the programme.
In expert meetings and workgroups, activities are organised around the main question: What competences do general education teachers and special education teachers need to have in order to be competent inclusive teachers? After this course you will go home with a lot of ideas on how to organize your own inclusive classes! A quote from a student who participated last year in the course: 'The expert meetings and school visits gave a good expression how it works in the classroom!'
