This course illustrates the intricate balance between infection and immunity in the human host. To gain insight into this interface between the two, this course will start by refreshing your knowledge in Immunology and Microbiology. Each following day contains 2 themes within either immunology or microbiology (alternating). Examples of these themes are; Memory in the Immune System, Immune Tolerance, Intracellular Pathogens, Clinical Immunology, Clinical Bacteriology and Public Health. The last part of the program is dedicated to those areas where infection and immunity meet, such as Vaccines and Microbial Immune Evasion. Finally, on the last day you can apply all your knowledge in a scientific debate and a quiz within the central theme: Infection meets Immunity.

The program is intended for master students and starting PhD-students. It is necessary to have a course certificate in Immunology and/or Microbiology or courses with similar content.
Course aim
Utrecht University has a strong history in research Infection and Immunity. It is home to some world-wide expert research teams in this area. The aim of this course is to familiarize you in depth with the scientific knowledge in the field of Infection and Immunity. After this course students will be able to relate immunological principles and clinical consequences and will have knowledge about bacterial and viral related diseases. Especially on those areas were infection meets immunity.
