In an increasingly interconnected world, opportunities and problems from the Arab Spring to the European debt crisis and the 'rise' of China have become truly international.Designed for all those interested in this unique sphere of academic study, you will examine approaches within International Relations, from core concepts like power or sovereignty to the specific theories of international politics, such as realist, liberal institutionalist, and constructivist thinking, as well as taking a close look at global governance and international political economy.

We will bridge the gap between theoretical insights and practical problems such as the occurrence of war, the role of the United Nations or international responses to climate change.Not only will you gain a broad knowledge of concepts and approaches to study the 'international', but also the skill to use these concepts to critically analyse international issues.

The course will cover a broad range of International Relations theories, in addition to taking a close look at international political economy approaches.It will link theoretical foundations of International Relations with practical experience. The intensive programme includes visits to different 'actors' in international politics such as the Commonwealth Secretariat, the Foreign Office and a Think Tank.

This course is open to any student interested in learning more about international relations and related subjects.

Course aim
By the end of this course you will:

- Gain an understanding of the major concepts and theoretical approaches in contemporary International Relations including the key substantive assumptions underpinning the various schools.



- Be able to assess 'real world' events and developments critically and in a creative fashion by employing theoretical frameworks.

- Get first-hand exposure to international diplomats and organisations as well as negotiation situations.

7.5 ECTS credits

Many of our students get credit for the summer courses taken at Kings. You should approach your home university before applying to find out whether they accept our courses for credit. We would recommend a three-week course to be equivalent 4 US credits or 7.5 ECTS, for instance.

Mark T. Fliegauf is doctoral researcher at the University of Cambridge and a lecturer (Lehrbeauftragter) in Leadership at the University of Munich (LMU). His research focuses on Leadership and International Relations. Mark obtained a B.A. (Zwischenprung)
