It focuses on orality and performance, exploring ways in which these find expression primarily (but not exclusively) through music, dance, ritual and language. After presenting a general theoretical framework for the study of the themes, it concentrates on specific cultural contexts (Swahili (East-Africa)), Dagara (West-Africa)), Kung (South-Africa)) etc.), illustrated with case studies.
The key words of the course are ethnocentrism, community, language, vibration, present moment, spirit, ancestors, mask, persona, rhythm, drum, voice, movement, earth, water, fire, air, minerals, healing, story, and ritual.
