This course provides an introduction to educational measurement. The course is centred around the three main fields of application for educational measurement: exams, surveys, and the monitoring of progress. The purpose of exams is to take decisions on individual students; whereas the purpose of a survey is to compare subpopulations.
Monitoring progress on the other hand aims at tracking a student through time. Each of these fields of application requires its own methodological approach. A fourth topic that is covered is the setting of performance standards as it applies regardless of the purpose. The elements of educational measurement that will be treated are Classical Test Theory, Item Response Theory (IRT), estimation and evaluation of IRT models, equating of tests, multilevel regression, application of plausible values, modelling of growth and standard setting.
