In this course, students will be taught the basics of the theoretical framework evolved from and based on Chomsky (1981). One of Chomsky's main innovations was to give linguistics the formal tools to study language.

The formal tools of generative linguistics enabled linguists to explore the complexity of sentence structure and sentence meaning. The theory accounts for the creativity of human language; the characteristic that makes human language unlike the communication system of any other animal. Topics covered will include phrase structure, complementation, case and theta-theory, and movement.
