The Holocaust forms a crucial chapter in European history, as well as a central issue in the contemporary European politics of memory. Today, researching the Holocaust is a European intellectual duty.Holocaust and Genocide Studies form a cross-disciplinary field of scholarly inquiry for historians, lawyers, philosophers, psychologists as well as sociologists. As a field, it is not limited to the events of the Second World War, but has taken a comprehensive interest in questions tied to the human rights and discrimination of minorities within societies, which contribute directly to both foreign and domestic policy formation.

Target group
This course is desinged for historians, lawyers, philosophers, psychologists as well as sociologists who have completed at least two years of University studies.

Course aim
The summer course introduces students to the international Holocaust and Genocide Studies. The course will host such highly respected senior scholars as Cecilie Stokholm Banke, Philippe Boukara and Wichert ten Have as key speakers. The course also gives a unique opportunity to discuss advanced students' or junior researchers' own fields of interest.

The successful completion of the course will require classroom attendance and active participation in the workshops as well as the completion of a written assignment. To receive six ECTS credits, the students must actively take part in the course and write a 10-12 page essay. Students who wish to receive 10 ECTS credits must submit a 20-25 page essay in addition to active participation in the course. All students should submit their essays to the organization not later than one month after the conclusion of the course.

Course fee
EUR 470: Course fee

The course fee can be paid with a credit card or with a bank transfer before the start of the Helsinki Summer School. It can also be paid upon your arrival in Helsinki. Degree and exchange students attending universities in the Helsinki area are exempted from the course fee. Degree and exchange students attending other Finnish universities are required to pay a half of the course fee (235 EUR).

EUR 150: Registration fee

The registration fee is 150 EUR additional fees for international students. Payment is due within seven days of receipt of written notification of your acceptance to Helsinki Summer School. If you register before 31 May 2012, you will receive a 50 EUR discount on the registration fee. The registration fee for degree or exchange students attending Finnish universities is 50 EUR. The registration fee is non-refundable. Payment may be made either by bank transfer or credit card (Visa and Eurocard/Mastercard only).If we do not receive a credit card payment or copy of the bank transfer within one week of notification of your acceptance, we will have no choice but to cancel your course reservation. Your application will, however, remain in our database and, if there are still places available, you may renew your registration simply by contacting us.
