Of significant value for anyone wishing to develop their knowledge of people-centred activities in organisations, this course provides a strong foundation in the theory and practice of Human Resource Management (HRM).As a student, you'll explore a number of core issues, from recruitment and selection and career development to employee stress and well-being.
You'll also gain the opportunity to explore wider themes in international HRM.In class you'll critically appraise a variety of practices in both the manufacturing and service sectors, and link your understanding to the broader issues facing organisations.The course examines both historical and contemporary issues, introducing the key debates in the field and complementing the seminar sessions with activities including role-playing, documentary screenings and field observations to enhance your appreciation of HR practices and locating HR activities within the wider organisation.
There may also be the chance to reinforce your key learning with external visits and opportunities in stores across central London.You will be able to gain an insight into a range of HRM policies, and critically engage with a number of people-centred activities in business through your study on this course. Specifically, the course will examine key issues and debates in the following areas:
- The role of HRM in organisations;
- Recruitment and selection;
- Career management by individuals and organisations;
- Employee stress and well-being;
- The link between HRM and organisational performance;
- International issues in HRM.
External visits and opportunities will include visiting specific stores in central London with the aim of enhancing the critical appraisal of various job designs and service work features and a visit to a Job Centre or recruitment agency to speak with staff members about recruitment processes.

- Be aware of diverse HR practices and their role in organisations;
- Understand the changing nature of employment from both the employer and employees' perspectives;
- Identify a variety of issues in international HRM.
