Inter-organizational relations between two or more organizations exist in public, private and mix sector contexts for example in the form of, for example, alliances, joint ventures, consortia, networks as well as partnerships. Relationships between organizations are recognized to be of crucial importance for the success of the organizations involved in reaching goals they cannot reach on their own. As the field of inter-organizational relations gets input from various disciplines, it is of utmost importance to get an overview of the varying theoretical and disciplinary perspectives to be able to navigate in the field.
This course provides a broad introduction to inter-organizational relations and will tackle the various forms and purposes of inter-organizational relations in local, national, and global settings as well as varying theoretical and disciplinary perspectives. After completing this course, the participants will be able to identify and describe a wide variety of the inter-organizational relations of profit, not-for-profit and non-profit organizations and will be able to distinguish between different perspectives used in studying inter-organizational relations.
Furthermore, the participants will be able to compare inter-organizational relational forms with one another and analyze them using various approaches.In addition to learning the content, the participants will further develop their skills in essay writing and classroom discussion. The course consists of lectures and seminars and may include company visits. The seminars will be used to deepen the understanding of the forms, purposes, and perspectives on inter-organizational relations through presenting, discussing, and developing further by writing individual essays for the course.
This course is aimed at students with a variety of backgrounds for example sociology, organization studies, management studies, business administration, public administration, political science, economic geography, entrepreneurship, or marketing. The students should have some knowledge of the basic concepts of organization sociology.
