This course starts from the introduction of young children acquiring their native language (L1). Then it explores the acquisition of a second language (L2) after their childhood. Major issues, such as critical period, in L2 acquisition will be discussed. The course covers the development of phonemes, syllable structures, stress, intonation and words both in L1 and L2. The acquisition of a variety of languages will be presented. During this course, students will learn how to analyze L1 and L2 data from literature and corpora.
