Introduction to Using C. Elegans as Model Organism in Biomedical Research

The small soil nematode Carnorhabditis elegans is a popular genetic model organism used in laboratories worldwide to study complex biological processes such as for example aging, apoptosis and neurobiology. The course will provide a practical introduction to using C. elegans in biomedical research.

The course participants will have hands on experience with popular techniques such as RNAi, genetic crosses, transgenic and GFP reporter strains. Furthermore, the course participants will be able to inactive their own gene of interest in C. elegans using RNAi.

Thus, during the course the participants will not only be familiarized with using C. elegans as model organism but also be able to evaluate if C. elegans can be used to advance their own ongoing and future studies. Several internationally renowned C. elegans researcher will be invited to give seminars complementing the practical parts of the course.

Course aim
After completion of the course it is expected that the student can:

- Understand how C. elegans can be used in biomedical research

- Evaluate pros and cons of using C. elegans compared to other model organisms.



- Explain the methods which have been used during the course

- Critically evaluate the strengths and weakness of publications describing C. elegans studies.

- Critically evaluate results from C. elegans studies and draw conclusions from these.

- Design C. elegans experiments relevant for their own research projects.

Course fee
EUR 0: Students on a bilateral exchange programme do not have to pay. Freemovers are obliged to pay participation fees while tuition fees only apply to freemovers from countries outside the EU/EEA/Switzerland.
