Epidemiology of infectious diseases is increasingly important in our society and outbreaks in human and animal populations are almost continuously present in the news. Decisions on prevention and control have to be taken for many existing and emerging infections. In farm animals we have recently notably seen discussions on avian influenza, bluetongue virus, Q-fever and several other zoonotic agents.
The problems involved in control and prevention of such infections call for a population-level approach, i.e. for an epidemiological analysis and evidence based practice.This course offers a sound introduction into that field. It includes both instruction and practical training of basic epidemiological principles, based on disease data in horses, dogs, cattle, swine, poultry, and wildlife, and can be viewed as a general introduction to veterinary epidemiology.
Students will also be exposed to state of the art epidemiological infectious disease research in discussion meetings with researchers. We offer an attractive diverse program for students interested in a challenging mix of infectious disease research, population dynamics and the control and prevention of animal diseases.
