Language Description and Linguistic Fieldwork

The summer school course in language description and linguistic fieldwork will give you a broad introduction to the practical and methodological aspects of fieldwork, and the art of language description. It will also provide insight in the structures of two unfamiliar languages. The course consists of two parts: a structural course of a non-familiar language and fieldwork workshops with a speaker of an underdescribed language.

Course aim
At the end of the intensive language course you will be able to:

1) have insights in the grammatical structures of an unknown language

2) broaden your view of the diversity of the languages of the world

3) compare exotic constructions with those in more familiar languages

4) apply this knowledge in future fieldwork

At the end of the fieldwork part you will be able to:



1) Identify ethical, theoretical and ethnographic challenges of fieldwork

2) Apply your knowledge in practice

3) Acquire basic knowledge of a lesser-studied language

4) Gain insights in methods used in fieldwork

5) Work on the grammatical description of underdescribed languages

Students enrolled in the course will receive a reading package and online assignments, which they will have to have read and complete before the start of the course.

Course fee
EUR 0: Students on a bilateral exchange programme do not have to pay. Freemovers are obliged to pay participation fees while tuition fees only apply to freemovers from countries outside the EU/EEA/Switzerland.
