Legal, Economic and Political Governance of Resource Exploitation in the Arctic: Focus on Oil, Gas and Mining Industries

The Arctic is the region around the North Pole with series of islands, ice-formations and seas north of the Arctic Circle. The US Geological Survey reported in 2008 on a potential of up to 30% of the world%B4s undiscovered gas and 13% of the world%B4s undiscovered oil resources in the Arctic. There is no agreed definition of the geographical extent of the Arctic. The legal, economic and governmental conditions for enterprises that are interested in investing in offshore oil and gas drillings in the Arctic Ocean are the focal points of this summer school course.The Arctic region is covered by a variety of governance and regulatory regimes relating to the protection and preservation of the marine environment and the conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity as well as oil and gas resources.

Course aim
The outcome of this course is to meet the demand for more trained professionals specialized in the legal, economic and social situation in the Arctic Ocean, where many offshore drilling activities are expected to start up. The focus of the course is on the legal conditions. The offshore drilling in the Arctic region is expected to offer several job opportunities in the future, and for most of the people working in a leading position, it will be of importance that they know something about the legal conditions.
